May 18 to May 31, 2004

Our adventure begins on the French Riviera in Nice, where we stroll the Promenade along the Mediterranean Sea and begin to immerse ourselves in the museums, beaches and the atmospheric street life of France today, that has evolved from ancient days of the Greeks and Romans. St. Paul de Vence, the charmingly restored medieval walled village, packed with galleries and studios, has been a magnet for artists since the 1920's, and the nearby Chapel of the Rosary, decorated by Henri Matisse, was considered by himself to be the masterpiece of his life. This is the Region of Provence, and we always have an eye out for cheery fabrics and other delights of the region.

Roussillon, is a vibrant ochre landscape, rendering pigments for artists, even back to prehistoric cave drawers. Fontaine de Vaucluse, is a picturesque village, with a powerful and deep spring that issues forth here into the Sorgue River. This is a day of interplay with the rich earth and refreshing waters.

We continue on to La Saint Baume, where walking through the sacred forrest takes you to a cave atop a promontory, with a wondrous panorama, where Mary Magdalene spent over 20 years of her life. Nearby is the town of St. Maximin, with a roadside stone marker commemorating the place where she died, and in the Cathedral are relics of her skull, encased in gold, and paintings and statues to portray her as reminders of her contributions to humanity of the Feminine Principle and the Grail Mysteries.

In May we are fortunate to be able to attend the Celebration at Les Sts. Marie de la Mer. From the boating party with Mary Magdalene and the other disciples that arrived here after the crucifixion, Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome, are depicted in a boat on the wall of the cathedral. During this weekend festival, they are taken in procession to the water, in commemoration of that event. In the crypt, a statue of the Black Virgin, St. Sara, is honored by the Gypsies as their patroness, and the town is filled with their colorful caravans and music, as they parade her through the streets. Some feel that she is the daughter of Mary Magdalene and her beloved. Also in the Camargue, this vast area of wetlands, pastures, dunes and salt flats, white horses and black bulls, is the 13th century village of Aigues Mortes, where Louis XI launched the first crusade. We delight in the charming Hotel Templiers here.

Our second week is reserved for the area of RENNES-LE-CHATEAU. The mystery and romance swirling around, arouses much curiosity. It centers around the discoveries made by the poor parish priest, Abbe' Sauniere, at the turn of the 1900's. Following the finding of the coded parchments, he became very wealthy and the center of attention by powerful and knowledgeable people all over Europe. The reputed treasure may have been an explosive secret of immense importance. He redecorated his church of the Magdalene, in a strange and telling way and built an impressive domain of his own including a tower dedicated to the Magdalene, and a handsome villa to house the famous visitors he was now attracting, including the Hapsburgs. Throughout the millenia, clues to the secrets have been encoded in writings, paintings, poetry, buildings and even in the landscape itself.

We will explore the surrounding areas and visit with local people eager to share their knowledge of the rich history and energies of the area.

Among these are MONTSEGUR = the last bastion of the Cathars
RENNES-LES-BAINS = originally Roman Baths, now hot spring spa for our rejuvenation
